MSMail:OpenMail - Product Brief
"Keeping The Enterprise In Touch"
OpenMail Overview
OpenMail is a Standards Based, Open System messaging solution built
around the X.400 standard and is designed for corporate-wide electronic
information distribution. It gives users flexibility of choice in which
desktop environment they use, what types of information they distribute
and which systems they exchange information with.
Key Benefits
Scalable - OpenMail is fully scalable with processor size and this is
paramount where usage is heavy or peaked in nature, and where flexibility
in network design and future capacity changes are key.
Reliable - OpenMail is designed for mission critical environments. It
conforms to the client server model, with a transaction-oriented protocol
providing the communication between client and server components. This
ensures reliable transport so that should any component fail, the system
is in a position to detect that failure and recover completely.
Low Cost of Ownership - A major factor in the cost equation is system
administration, the resources and skills required to administer and
maintain a solution and ensure its smooth and continuous operation.
OpenMail provides comprehensive tools and utilities that, along with
detailed audit and statistical information, ensure fast and effective
system administration.
MSMail:OpenMail
The Microsoft Mail and OpenMail solution is designed to meet the needs of
customers with large global networks. Customers will gain access to a
robust, standards-based messaging backbone from Hewlett-Packard, along
with a leading-edge client user interface from Microsoft.
The Right Recipient - First Time, On Time, Every Time:
. Automatic Address Resolving, enabling users to supply names with
minimum address information.
. Support of additional Directory Attributes, such as job title,
department name, office name, etc., to help users select recipients of
their messages.
. Personal and public Distribution List management including re-routing
of mail via public distribution lists.
. Extended Searching Algorithms, allowing customer-specific phonetic
probes, for example Soundex, direct keyed access and full sequential
search.
. Wildcard Searching and other Algorithms, such as phonetic matching, to
enable users to enter, for example, "*/pinewood" to get a complete list
of users at mailnode "pinewood", and then be able to pick from that
list.
. Acknowledgments (registered mail) to confirm messages have been
read/received on a per user basis.
. Send mail to anyone, anywhere - one global address list includes
everyone you can communicate with.
. Select names from an easy-to-use address book - Name Finder can help
you find the right name fast.
. Use your personal address book to create a private list of individuals
or groups you can communicate with regularly.
. Type names directly into a message's address fields if you prefer -
Microsoft Mail will double-check the names for you.
Cost Effective to Set Up and Run:
. Loop Detection to prevent messages from 'looping' around the system.
. Comprehensive set of Administration Commands to administer and maintain
OpenMail, including Directory Management, Audit Logging, Distribution
Lists, Routes and Mailnodes.
. Audit and Statistics to enable comprehensive logging of message traffic
to facilitate performance analysis, detailed billing of users, etc.
. Batch Print program, providing the capability to print the contents of
selected users mailboxes as a batch job.
. Error Manager Server to aid in identifying and resolving any network
and routing problems that may occur.
. Local or Remote Administration.
. Monitor Facility, including Component Monitoring of local message
delivery, gateways, etc., mails exception reports (identifying system
problems) to a specified user, before they affect user performance.
. One Message Copy per server and per route to save disc space.
. Click on the toolbar to perform everyday tasks fast.
. Display folders and messages together in one window so you can store
and organize messages quickly.
. Sort messages in each folder by clicking column headings - sort by
sender, subject, priority or time received, in ascending or descending
order.
. Share files quickly - send them from within the Microsoft Windows
operating system version 3.1 File Manager or drag them directly into a
message.
. Online tutorial guides you through features step by step.
. Online Help gives you answers when you need them.
Works with Your Current Infrastructure:
. Supports all GOSIP'84 mandatory elements.
. X.400 Based Messaging, both addressing and message features, for
electronic information exchange in a multi-vendor environment and for
connection to other X.400 Compatible Mail Systems using X.400 MTAs .
. OpenMail to OpenMail transport over X.400 to allow users to transport
complex objects over X.400 1984 standard networks, between OpenMail
nodes, without losing their file type information.
. Message heading mapping at the Unix Mail gateway based on the Unix
standards (by adoption) RFC987 and RFC1148.
. Connection to Sendmail based mailing systems and Sendmail Transport
system for node to node transfer of messages.
. OpenMail is X/Open Compliant for portability to other platforms. It
supports Multiple Platforms, running on DEC Ultrix, HP-UX, IBM AIX and
SCO-Unix and is therefore flexible to meet the needs of different size
work groups.
. Unix Mail Gateway that converts messages into a suitable form for Unix
mail and uses SMTP to pass them to Sendmail for delivery.
Simple to Use:
. Aliases, enabling alternative names to be assigned to users.
. Support for the Attachment of binary and other file types and the
Automatic Identification of file types.
. Number of Message Parts and Message Size limited only by available disc
space.
. Context Sensitive Help system.
. Configurable File Type and Document Conversion, using OpenMail and
third party convertors.
. Configurable Print Server for automatic printing of messages.
. Add charts, pictures, sound and other multimedia objects directly into
your messages - Microsoft Mail supports object linking and embedding
(OLE).
. Prevent embarrassing mistakes - you can check the spelling of important
messages individually or have Microsoft Mail automatically check all
your messages.
. Assign a priority to your messages so recipients can focus on important
messages.
. Ask for a return receipt so you'll know when your message is read.
Freedom of Choice of Best In Class Components:
. Command Line Interface to enable users to access the system from the
shell via the commands omsend and omlist. These can also be used by
application programs which do not intend to make heavy use of mailing.
. Gateway Application Programming Interfaces (GAPIs) to enable gateway
applications to plug into OpenMail via a gateway API.
. User Agent Layer (UAL) to enable user interfaces to access the OpenMail
system via the User Agent Layer.
. X/Open Compliant for portability to other platforms.
. Document Conversion to text and browsing for AdvanceWrite, Executive
Memomaker, and DCA documents.
Fits with Your Organizational Work Patterns:
. Categorization of mail - Priority (Normal, Non-urgent, Urgent) and
Sensitivity (Normal, Personal, Private, Company Confidential).
. Route Filtering to update the active recipient list as a message passes
from one OpenMail system to another.
. Comprehensive Routing Table with 'wildcard' facility to group similar
addresses routed to the same delivery service.
. Access Control Lists to control access to requests, gateways,
directories and system printers and provide closed user group
facilities.
. Access Password protected, including over remote connections.
. Mailbox Secure from masquerading PC or Unix programs.
. Messages Encoded for transmission over Sendmail.
. NetLS "software licensing" technology to enable the purchase and
management of the specific modules and number of users required.
. General Application Server to allow special 'request' scripts to be set
up on an OpenMail system by administrators. Users, with the
appropriate permissions, can then perform or run these scripts simply
by mailing to the Request Server.
. OpenMail uses a universal Time Zone Stamp code to store the dates
messages were created, delivered, etc.
. Message splitting by Blind Carbon Copies. This allows OpenMail to
correctly preserve the security of BCC names.
. Stay on top of important messages - its easy to create Message Finders
to filter messages based on sender, subject, recipients and/or message
text; incoming messages that match your criteria will automatically be
displayed in the appropriate Message Finder.
. Save messages in hierarchical folders - the graphical folder outline
gives you a visual overview, so its easy to move between and create
folders.
. Share valuable information with your workgroup by using bulletin
boards.
. Work offline when you're not connected to the network - you can still
compose and send messages, and read and manage existing messages.
. Build on Microsoft Mail using the Microsoft messaging application
programming interface (MAPI).
. Customize your system:
. Create your own electronic forms to automate specific business
operations.
. Add menu commands so you can perform common tasks without leaving
Microsoft Mail.
. Send messages while working in other applications such as Microsoft
Excel and Microsoft Word for Windows - you can automatically attach
the file you're working on.
. Launch applications automatically - recipients can double-click any
attachment to launch the application and load the attached file; and
they can continue to use Microsoft Mail without closing the launched
application.
Adapts to Your Changing Needs:
. Split Data Directory across multiple discs to ensure that disc I/O will
not be a bottleneck to performance with large numbers of users on high-
end CPUs.
. Configurable Maintenance Times.
